Mount Kaiishi, also known as Kaiishi-yama, is located in Sakakibara-cho, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. This small, unassuming mountain is notable for the fossils dating back 15 to 20 million years that have been found here, giving it the name "Fossil Shell Mountain." While not a challenging climb, it's more of a scenic spot for viewing. Access is available via a 15-minute bus ride from Sakakibara Onsen-guchi Station to the Shinyu-kan-mae bus stop. The mountain was once the sacred body of Isayama Shrine, and the deity enshrined at the eighth station of Mount Kaiishi is called Onsen Daimyojin, connecting the hot spring, shrine, and mountain. It's a pleasant addition to a stroll through the Sakakibara Onsen area, offering a glimpse into the region's geological past.
