Explore the Mount Atago Tumulus, the third largest keyhole-shaped tomb in Miyagi Prefecture, dating back to the early Kofun period (late 4th century). This 90-meter long burial mound features fukiishi (covering stones) and haniwa (terracotta figures). Located in Murata Town, it's accessible by bus from Ōgawara Station on the Tōhoku Main Line or a short drive from the Murata Interchange on the Tōhoku Expressway. While the tumulus is now covered in trees, a ground-penetrating radar survey in 1990 revealed a possible pit-style burial facility beneath the circular rear mound. A prefecturally designated historical site since 1969, it offers a glimpse into the region's ancient past.
Cultural Property: Prefectural Designated Historic Site. Constructed: Early Kofun period (late 4th century). Designated: April 10, 1969.
