Discover Sesshu's Garden at Matsuyadera Temple in Hiji, Oita, a serene Japanese garden believed to have been designed by the renowned ink painter Sesshu during his stay in the area in the late 15th century. Admire the "Shinji-ike" pond, shaped like the character for "heart." Located a 10-minute walk from Yagaya Station, the temple grounds also feature a massive Japanese sago palm, said to be the largest in Japan, brought from Funai Castle by the second lord of Hiji Domain. Note that general admission is currently suspended; contact the temple directly for inquiries about visiting the treasure hall. A peaceful retreat for history and garden enthusiasts.
