The Former Nisshinkan is a historic Western-style building in Yokote, Akita Prefecture. Built in 1902 under the guidance of American teacher Charles C. Champlin, it served as a residence for English teachers at Yokote Middle School. Later, missionary M.M. Smyzer, also a former teacher, purchased and lived in the house. This unique wooden structure, a rare example of Meiji-era Western architecture in Akita, features a charming facade and balcony. Open to the public on Wednesdays, visitors can explore the interior and learn about its fascinating history. Located a short bus ride from Yokote Station, with parking available, it's a worthwhile stop for those interested in history and architecture.
