Insetsu-ji Temple Mantō Kuyō (Ten Thousand Lantern Memorial Service)

Overview

Insetsu-ji Temple is located in Higashiōmi, Shiga Prefecture, and is accessible by bus and a 10-minute walk from JR Notogawa Station, or a 15-minute drive from the Meishin Expressway Yokkaichi Interchange. The temple is known for its Mantō Kuyō (Ten Thousand Lantern Memorial Service), where approximately 5,000 stone Buddhist statues, collected by worshippers in the hope of reaching the Pure Land, are illuminated with candles. This creates a mystical atmosphere and is a summer tradition. Note that the event was not held in 2023. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and view the stone statues year-round.
