Explore the Matsushiro Zozan Underground Shelter, a fascinating relic from the end of World War II. This network of tunnels was secretly constructed as a potential relocation site for the Imperial General Headquarters and government functions. Today, visitors can venture into a portion of the preserved underground complex, donning helmets to explore the rugged, hand-carved rock tunnels. Located in Matsushiro, Nagano City, the shelter is a 20-minute walk from Matsushiro Station (accessible by bus from JR Nagano Station) or a short drive from the Nagano Interchange. Open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:30 PM), with free admission, it's a sobering reminder of wartime history. Note that the site is closed on the third Tuesday of each month.
Parking: 8 spaces for standard cars, 7 spaces for large vehicles. Daikan-cho (Zozan East Parking Area): 7-minute walk from here to the underground shelter.
