Taizanji Temple

Overview

Taizanji Temple, the 56th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, was founded in 815 by the revered monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Legend says Kobo Daishi built embankments to protect the local people from the frequently flooding Soja River. The temple features a main hall, Daishi hall, and bell tower. The principal image, a carved wooden Jizo statue from the Muromachi period, is one of the largest in the region. Located in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, the temple is accessible by taking a 10-minute bus ride from Imabari Station to the "Koizumi" stop, followed by a 15-minute walk. The temple offers a serene atmosphere and a glimpse into Shikoku's rich Buddhist heritage.
