Mount Haguro, one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa, is a site steeped in ancient mountain asceticism, dating back approximately 1,400 years. Founded by Prince Hachiko, it's known for its spiritual significance and the Haguro School of Ancient Shugendo. Visitors can explore the 2,446 stone steps leading to the summit, passing through a serene cedar forest with trees over 400 years old. Key attractions include the five-story pagoda, the Suiga Falls, and the grand Jiji-sugi cedar tree, estimated to be 1,000 years old. The Sanjingosaiden hall at the summit enshrines the deities of all three mountains. Accessible by bus from JR Tsuruoka Station or by car via the Shonai Asahi IC, Mount Haguro offers a blend of natural beauty and spiritual heritage.
