Sashiki Castle Ruins

Overview

Explore the historic Sashiki Castle Ruins, founded by Kato Kiyomasa as a strategic point on the border of Higo and Satsuma. Discover remnants of early Edo period castle construction techniques and the destruction caused by the One Castle per Province Edict. Key artifacts include roof tiles with the inscription "Peace Throughout the Realm" and paulownia crest tiles, designated as important prefectural cultural properties. The site, designated a national historic landmark in March 2008, offers scenic views and a glimpse into feudal Japan. The ruins are a 20-minute walk from Sashiki Station on the Hisatsu Orange Railway or a 3-minute drive from Ashikita IC on the Minami-Kyushu Nishi-mawari Expressway.
