Koya Pilgrimage Route Choishi-michi

Overview

Embark on a spiritual journey along the Koya Pilgrimage Route Choishi-michi, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the traditional path to the sacred Mount Koya. This ancient route, marked by stone markers (choishi) every 109 meters, stretches from Jison-in Temple to the Okunoin Mausoleum, covering approximately 24 kilometers. Originally established by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism, the path offers a serene hiking experience through forests and historical landmarks. The majority of the stone markers date back to the Kamakura period, providing a tangible connection to the past. Access the starting point at Jison-in Temple via a 25-minute walk from Kudoyama Station on the Nankai Koya Line. Be prepared for a lengthy hike if attempting the entire route.
