Overview

Somekuro Temple, located a 10-minute walk from JR Kitakami Station near the Kitakami River, is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple with an intriguing local legend. The temple is known for preserving a "kappa's pledge," a document said to be signed by a kappa (a mythical Japanese water creature) promising not to cause further trouble after being captured and lectured by the temple's priest in the Edo period. The temple features a notable wooden Sanmon gate that exudes historical charm. While the temple grounds are generally quiet, the lack of lighting makes nighttime visits challenging. Visit during the day to fully appreciate the temple's architecture and serene atmosphere.
