The Zao Onsen Open-Air Bath offers a unique and invigorating hot spring experience surrounded by nature in Yamagata. Located a bit of a climb from the main Zao Onsen town, this large, rustic bath features naturally acidic, sulfurous waters known for their skin-rejuvenating properties. Note that there are no showers or washing facilities available, as the focus is purely on soaking in the therapeutic waters. The upper section of the bath tends to be hotter, while the lower section is milder. Open from mid-April to mid-November, it's best to visit during the warmer months. Be aware that the path to the bath can be steep, and facilities are limited, but the experience of bathing in the open air is well worth it.
