The Ao-no-Domon Tunnel, made famous by Kan Kikuchi's novel "Beyond the Pale of Vengeance," is located at the base of Mt. Keishuhou along the Yamakuni River. Zenkai, a priest, began construction of the tunnel after witnessing the dangers of the original path. Completed in 1764 after about 30 years, the 342-meter tunnel was carved with only chisels and hammers. While the current tunnel has been modified, some original features remain. It's also a popular spot for autumn foliage. Located about 20 minutes by car from Nakatsu IC or 40 minutes from Hita IC.
