The Former Kaichi School, a National Treasure, is one of Japan's oldest Western-style primary school buildings, dating back to 1873. Located in Matsumoto, Nagano, it's easily accessible by bus or a 25-minute walk from Matsumoto Station. This unique wooden structure features a distinctive octagonal tower and imported glass windows. Currently, it operates as an education museum, housing approximately 30,000 educational materials. Note that the school is undergoing seismic reinforcement work until autumn of 2024, limiting interior access, but the exterior remains a worthwhile sight. Visit the adjacent Former Matsumoto City Priest Residence for exhibits related to the school.
