The Former Kamei Residence, also known as Kyu Kamei-tei, is a historical house located in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, near Shiogama Shrine. This well-preserved residence, built in 1924 by the founder of Kamei Corporation, showcases a blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles, reflecting the prosperity of the area during the Taisho era. Visitors can explore the intricate details of the building, including the unique staircase design and decorative elements, and learn about the history of Shiogama through exhibits and guided tours. Open to the public free of charge, it offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of a successful merchant family and the cultural fusion of the time. The residence is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (3:30 PM in winter) but closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, as well as during the New Year holidays.
