The Todai-ji Temple Nigatsudo Torch Ritual is a significant event held annually, with preparations beginning on February 11th when cypress is cut from Mt. Taimatsu to create torches weighing 150kg, which are then enshrined at Gokurakuji Temple. On March 10th, the "Iga Ichinoi Torch Transfer Ritual Service" takes place, where torches are carried from Gokurakuji to Todai-ji Temple in a procession, with prayers for safety along the route. Visitors can witness part of this event at Gokurakuji Temple in Nabari, Mie Prefecture. The torches are eventually used in the famous Omizutori ritual at Todai-ji Temple's Nigatsudo Hall in Nara.
Date: March 10th (Friday) from 1:00 PM Location: Gokurakuji Temple Main Hall and Goma Altar *Reception available on the day; anyone can participate in the prayer. On March 12th, the torches are carried approximately 35km to Todai-ji Temple in Nara Prefecture, partially on foot over the mountains. These torches are enshrined for one year and then used in the Shunie ritual (commonly known as Omizutori) 'Otaimatsu' held at Todai-ji Nigatsudo the following year. Number of visitors: 32 people
