Choanji Temple, founded approximately 900 years ago, is one of the Tohoku region's most renowned temples. Its towering 20-meter-high main gate, constructed entirely of Japanese zelkova wood, is a sight to behold. Although construction began in 1796, the gate was nearly demolished by the Date clan due to the use of restricted zelkova wood and its impressive height. Today, visitors can explore the temple grounds, admire the main hall built in 1833, and see the Oshu weeping cherry tree and large ginkgo tree, both designated as natural monuments of Ofunato City. The temple is open year-round, and parking is available. It is accessible by bus to the Kenritsu Ofunato Byoin-mae Bus Stop, then another 20 minutes to Tera-mae Bus Stop on the Goyou Onsen line, or by car.
