Kishu Toshogu Shrine, also known as "Nikko of Kansai," was founded in 1621 by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first lord of the Kishu domain. The shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and Tokugawa Yorinobu. Visitors can reach the shrine via bus from JR Wakayama Station or Nankai Wakayamashi Station, followed by a short walk from the Gongen-mae bus stop. Ascending the steep stone steps is challenging but rewarding, as it leads to panoramic views of Wakanoura Bay. The main hall features intricate carvings and vibrant colors, showcasing the artistry of Hidari Jingoro and Kano Tanyu. Guided tours of the main hall are available for a fee, offering insights into the shrine's history and architectural details. The shrine is particularly known for its 108-step "Samurai Slope," offering a stunning view of Wakanoura.
