The Tomoe River, also known as Uzumagawa, flows through the heart of Tochigi City's historic district, once a vital waterway for transporting goods to and from Edo (present-day Tokyo). Today, it offers a picturesque scene with stone-paved paths, willow trees, and leisurely sightseeing cruises. The river is particularly enchanting from March to May when colorful carp streamers adorn the waterway. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, observe the koi and ducks, and appreciate the well-preserved townscape. The best time to visit is during the day to fully appreciate the scenery and the carp streamers.
