The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival, held annually on August 2nd and 3rd, is a spectacular display set against the backdrop of the Shinano River. This event features a variety of large-scale fireworks, including the famous "Sho-Sandshakudama" and the emotionally resonant "Phoenix," a symbol of recovery from the Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake. The festival's origins lie in the Nagaoka Reconstruction Festival, held to commemorate those who died in the Nagaoka Air Raid of August 1, 1945, and to pray for the city's revival. The fireworks are launched with prayers for peace and reconstruction. Held at the Shinano River riverbed (downstream of Chosei Bridge), access is a 30-minute walk from JR Nagaoka Station, with paid parking available at Echigo Hillside Park. Note that all seats are paid, and prices vary by area and seat type.
