Ryōzen-ji Temple, Temple Number 1

Overview

Ryōzen-ji Temple, also known as Temple Number 1, is the starting point of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Founded by the Buddhist monk Gyōki during the Tempyō era (729-748) at the request of Emperor Shōmu, it's believed that Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) practiced here for 21 days, praying to establish the 88 sacred sites of Shikoku. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, including the main hall with its impressive ceiling art, a pagoda, and various statues. Located in Naruto, Tokushima, it's a 10-minute walk from Bandō Station. The temple offers a serene atmosphere and a chance to witness the beginning of a spiritual journey for many pilgrims.
