The "Kagi no Te" (literally "hook hand") is a unique, intentionally cranked road located at the border of the upper and middle sections of Narai-juku. This design, resembling a crank or dogleg, was a defensive measure in castle towns and post towns (shukuba-machi) to prevent enemies from advancing straight through and gaining a clear view. Today, it serves as a picturesque spot within the beautifully preserved Narai-juku, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity of historical town planning. It's a popular photo spot and a key feature of the Nakasendo trail. Visit during the day to fully appreciate the preserved townscape.
