The Shio no Michi Chikuni Course, or Salt Road, is a historic route once used to transport salt and marine products from the Sea of Japan to inland regions. This section of the Chikuni Kaido, the most famous of the salt roads, stretches approximately 120 km from Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture to Matsumoto Castle. Visitors can explore sections of the trail near Hakuba, such as the Kannongahara area with its impressive array of over 100 stone Buddhist statues. Access is available from Minami-Otari Station via a 20-minute bus ride to Tsugaike Kogen, followed by a short walk. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear for the mountain trails.
