The Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome is a unique architectural landmark located a 5-minute walk from Wakkanai Station. Built between 1931 and 1936, this impressive structure was designed by Minoru Tsuchiya to protect the roads and railways leading to the former Sakhalin ferry terminal from waves and spray. Its semi-arched design, reminiscent of ancient Roman architecture, features 70 pillars and stretches 427 meters. Designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site in 2001, the dome offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of Sakhalin crossings and provides a scenic spot for a stroll along the waterfront. The best time to visit is during the day to fully appreciate the architecture and surrounding views.
