Suwa Shrine

Overview

Suwa Shrine, located in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture, is a historic Shinto shrine easily accessible from Joshu-Tomioka Station and a short walk from the Tomioka Silk Mill. Originally relocated from Miyazaki Village, the shrine features intricate carvings on its main hall, reflecting its rich history. Visitors can admire the unique komainu (guardian dogs), some of which are depicted carrying children, symbolizing prosperity. The shrine offers a peaceful contrast to the bustling silk mill area, providing a serene atmosphere for reflection. While the grounds are spacious, they lack extensive greenery. The best time to visit is during the day to appreciate the architectural details.
