Aoganji Temple, located at the foot of Mt. Tao, is a Zen temple of the Soto sect founded in the early Nanbokucho period. It is a 10-minute walk from Maibara Station. The temple is known for its beautiful strolling-style dry landscape garden that makes use of the mountain foothills. The garden is especially beautiful during the rainy season when the moss is a vibrant green. Don't miss the historic main hall and the serene atmosphere of the temple grounds. The temple also features a wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva from the mid-Kamakura period. Consider visiting during the day to fully appreciate the garden and temple architecture.
