The Old Amagi Tunnel, featured in Yasunari Kawabata's "Izu Dancer" and Seicho Matsumoto's "Amagi Pass," offers a glimpse into Japan's literary and historical landscape. Completed in 1905, this stone-built tunnel stretches 445.5 meters and is the oldest of its kind in Japan. Located between Yugashima, Izu City, and Kawazu Town in Shizuoka Prefecture, it's accessible via a 45-minute Tokai Bus ride from Shuzenji Station to Amagi Pass, followed by a 10-minute walk. The tunnel's interior is cool and dimly lit, creating a unique atmosphere. Note that the road leading to the tunnel can be unpaved and narrow, so caution is advised. Visit during the day to fully appreciate the surrounding natural beauty and historical significance.
