Taima Kehaya-zuka Mound

Overview

The Taima Kehaya-zuka Mound, located in Katsuragi, Nara Prefecture, is believed to be the burial site of Taima no Kehaya, considered the founder of sumo wrestling in Japan. Situated a short 5-minute walk from Taimadera Station, this historical site features a five-ringed stone tower (gorinto) and a monument dedicated to Taima no Kehaya, erected in 1937. While some historical records suggest it may be the tomb of Taima no Mahito Kunimi or Taima Hachiro Taminobu, its style indicates it dates back to the late Heian to Kamakura periods, likely belonging to a local official. Adjacent to the mound is the Sumo Museum (Kehaya-za), offering further insight into the history of sumo. Best time to visit is during the day to explore the mound and the museum.
