Mount Kōya, also known as Koyasan, is a sacred mountain and a major pilgrimage destination in Wakayama Prefecture. Founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) about 1200 years ago, it's the center of Shingon Buddhism. Explore the Okunoin Cemetery, with graves of historical figures, and the Danjo Garan temple complex. The area, part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit in the autumn for stunning foliage. Easily accessible by bus from Koyasan Station.
