Located near the entrance to Risshaku-ji Temple (Yamadera), the statues of Matsuo Basho and his disciple Sora commemorate Basho's visit in 1689, where he composed the famous haiku about the cicada's cry. These statues are found near the Sanmon gate, before the long staircase begins. The Basho statue was created in 1972, while Sora's was added in 1989. Nearby, you'll find the Konponchudo Hall, a treasure hall, and a monument inscribed with Basho's haiku. Before climbing the steps, try the local 'chikara konnyaku' (konnyaku simmered in soy sauce) from the souvenir shops, said to give you strength for the climb to Okunoin.
