Owakudani is a major tourist spot in Hakone, known for its volcanic hot springs and stunning views. Approximately 3000 years ago, Mount Kamiyama, Hakone's highest peak, experienced a steam explosion, creating a volcanic crater where hot steam and sulfuric gas still vent today. The area features a unique, barren landscape. A local specialty is "black eggs," boiled in the acidic hot mud unique to Owakudani. Access is available by bus from Odawara Station (60 minutes) or train from Hakone-Yumoto Station (40 minutes), followed by a cable car and ropeway. Note that the nature trail requires online reservations. Be aware that hiking courses through Owakudani are currently closed due to volcanic activity.
