Warei Shrine, located a short walk north of JR Uwajima Station along the Sugagawa River, is dedicated to Yamaga Koretari, a retainer of the Uwajima clan. Known locally as "Warei-sama," the shrine is revered as a guardian of industry and fishing. The impressive stone torii gate, said to be one of the largest in Japan, marks the entrance to the serene grounds. The shrine is particularly lively during the Warei Grand Festival in July, featuring the iconic Ushi-oni (cow demon) parade. Visitors can explore the main hall and even see a display of the Ushi-oni used in the festival. The shrine offers a peaceful escape and a glimpse into the local history and traditions of Uwajima.
