Overview

The Ota Residence, also known as the Tomo Nanakyo Ochi Remains, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property located in Tomonoura, Fukuyama. This historical site was once the residence of the Nakamura family, who were prominent brewers of Homeishu, a medicinal liqueur unique to Tomonoura. Later, it was acquired by the Ota family, who were shipping merchants. During the tumultuous period of the late Edo era, seven nobles fleeing Kyoto sought refuge here. Visitors can explore the well-preserved buildings and gain insight into the lives of wealthy merchants and the history of Tomonoura. It is conveniently located near the iconic Joyato lighthouse, making it an easily accessible and worthwhile stop during your visit to Tomonoura.
