Oya-ji Temple, also known as Oya Kannon, is home to Japan's oldest stone Buddha, a towering Thousand-Armed Kannon said to be carved by Kobo Daishi. Located in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, the temple features a main hall built into a cave, housing the Thousand-Armed Kannon alongside other significant Buddhist statues. This unique site is designated as a Special Historic Site and Important Cultural Property. Easily accessible by bus from JR Utsunomiya Station, it's a must-see for history and culture enthusiasts. Note that photography is prohibited inside the main hall. The best time to visit is during the afternoon to fully appreciate the serene atmosphere.
