Pagodas & Paddies

Tanzan Jinja in Sakurai is a historic Shinto shrine renowned for its unique 13-story wooden pagoda—the only one of its kind in Japan—originally built in 678 and reconstructed in 1532. The shrine enshrines Fujiwara no Kamatari, a key figure in the Taika Reform, and is celebrated for its vibrant autumn foliage and spring cherry blossoms. Nearby, the Kamura district in Asuka Village features the Inabuchi Tanada, a series of terraced rice fields recognized among Japan’s Top 100, offering picturesque landscapes that change with the seasons.
