Largest Man-made Lake

Designated as a prefectural natural park in 1974, Lake Shumarinai is Japan's largest man-made lake, known for its mysterious charm and as a habitat for the elusive huchen fish. The lake’s 13 islands create a delicate and intricate landscape, surrounded by vast forests of broad-leaved and coniferous trees. From mid-September to mid-October, visitors can enjoy vibrant autumn foliage, with calm days offering reflections of the colorful leaves on the lake’s surface.
