Iron Oxide Town

Fukiya Furusato Village is a well-preserved historic town nestled in the mountains of Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture. Once a prosperous copper mining center, it became renowned for producing "bengara," a vivid red iron oxide pigment that gave the town its distinctive red-hued buildings and Sekishu-gawara roof tiles. Designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, the village offers attractions like the Former Katayama Residence, Bengara Factory Museum, and the oldest wooden school building in Japan, the Former Fukiya Elementary School. Visitors can also participate in bengara dyeing workshops to create unique souvenirs. Accessible by a 55-minute bus ride from JR Bitchu-Takahashi Station, Fukiya provides a tranquil glimpse into Japan's Meiji-era heritage.
