Imperial Echoes
Perched atop Mt. Otokoyama, Iwashimizu Hachimangū Shrine is a historic Shinto sanctuary founded in 859, dedicated to Hachiman, the guardian deity of the imperial family. The shrine complex showcases the rare Hachiman-zukuri architectural style and features intricate Edo-period wood carvings. Visitors can ascend via the Otokoyama Cable Car, a brief ride offering panoramic views of the confluence of the Uji, Kizu, and Katsura rivers. The shrine grounds also include a monument honoring Thomas Edison, commemorating the local bamboo used in his early light bulb filaments. With its rich history and serene surroundings, Yawata offers a peaceful retreat steeped in cultural significance.
