Waterfall & Terraces

Tucked away in the mountains north of Gujo, Amidaga Falls (阿弥陀ヶ滝) is a 60-meter-high cascade recognized among Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. The falls are steeped in legend, with tales of Amida Buddha appearing to monks in meditation, and were famously depicted by Hokusai in his ukiyo-e series. A scenic trail leads visitors through serene forests to the base of the waterfall, offering a tranquil retreat into nature. En route, the Shōgahora Rice Terraces unfold—a historic landscape of tiered paddies dating back to the Sengoku period, celebrated among Japan’s 100 Best Rice Terraces. This off-the-beaten-path journey, approximately an hour’s walk from Hokuno Station, rewards travelers with a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. 18 min bus ride or 1 hour walk from Hokuno station.
