Ancient Cedar Forest
Tairyuji Temple, the 21st temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, is perched atop Mt. Tairyuji at an elevation of 618 meters in Tokushima Prefecture. Founded in 793 by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), it is renowned for its serene atmosphere, ancient cedar trees, and significant historical structures, including the Main Hall and Daishi Hall, both designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. The temple is accessible via the Tairyuji Ropeway, the longest in western Japan at 2,775 meters, offering a scenic 10-minute ride over the Naka River and surrounding mountains. Visitors can also explore Shashingatake, a rock where Kūkai is said to have meditated for 100 days during his youth.
