Cliffside Cave Temple

Sanbutsu-ji, located on Mount Mitoku in Misasa, Tottori Prefecture, is renowned for its Nageire-dō Hall, a wooden structure dramatically perched on a cliffside cave, designated as a National Treasure of Japan. The temple, founded in the 9th century and associated with the Shugendō tradition, offers a challenging ascent involving steep, rocky paths equipped with chains and tree roots for support. Visitors must wear appropriate footwear, such as climbing shoes or traditional straw sandals, and register at the climbers' office before undertaking the hike. The trail provides panoramic views and a profound sense of spiritual journey, culminating in the awe-inspiring sight of Nageire-dō seemingly suspended in the mountainside. Access is approximately 1.5 hours by bus from downtown Tottori City to the trailhead.
