Mythic Monolith

Tategasaki is a striking 80-meter-high basalt cliff in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, formed by volcanic activity over 14 million years ago. Its towering columnar joints resemble a massive shield rising from the sea, earning it the nickname "Cape of Shield." Accessible via a 40-minute forest trail or by sightseeing boat from Matsuzaki Port, visitors can admire its grandeur and the nearby Blue Grotto, known for its shimmering azure waters. The area is steeped in legend, believed to be the landing site of Emperor Jimmu during his journey to Yamato.
