Historical Snow Country

Nestled in Uonuma’s snow country, Echigo-Suhara offers a glimpse into rural Edo-period life at the Sumon Museum of History and Folklore. Housed in the Meguro Residence, a stately farmhouse built in 1797, the museum showcases traditional architecture adapted for heavy snowfall, complete with a tea room and a scenic courtyard garden. Once home to a prominent farming family with samurai roots, the residence is a designated Important Cultural Property and provides insights into the region’s agricultural and cultural heritage.
