Sacred Forest Giant

Kenkatsura, located in Nishigō Village, Fukushima Prefecture, is a 370-year-old katsura tree standing 45 meters tall with a 10-meter trunk circumference. Designated one of Japan’s “100 Giants of the Forest,” it’s both an ecological treasure and a sacred site. Legend says Lord Matsudaira Sadanobu sealed a demon inside it with a sword, inspiring its name, “Sword Katsura.” Set near the headwaters of the Abukuma River along old Route 289, the tree offers a peaceful forest retreat.
