Sacred Heritage

Jionji Temple, located in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a historic Buddhist temple with origins dating back to 724 AD. Originally affiliated with the Hossō sect, it later incorporated Tendai and Shingon practices. The temple complex, once comprising over 50 sub-temples, now features significant structures such as the Hondō (Main Hall), built in 1617, and a three-storied pagoda. It houses numerous Important Cultural Properties, including statues from the Heian and Kamakura periods. The temple grounds also host the annual Jionji Bugaku dance on May 5, a nationally recognized intangible cultural property. Visitors can enhance their experience at the nearby Jionji Terrace, which offers insights into the temple's history through exhibits and local cuisine.
